October Book Reviews

Summary: Allisn McKready is a succubus. So is her twin sister. But while Allison spends her summer break hiding in the library behind her Goth makeup, Jade fools around as often as she can. Allison can’t believe Jade would ignore their mother’s fatal example so recklessly, but concealing a cursed bloodline and its dangerous effects is far from Allison’s only problem. Mean girl Julie’s snob mob is determined to ruin her summer, and Aunt Sarah’s Bible thumping is getting louder. Only her new friend, Ren Fisher, offers safe haven from the chaos of her life.
When one of Jade’s risky dates leads to humiliation and sudden tragedy, Allison reels, and Ren catches her. But as her feelings for him grow, so does her fear that she’ll hurt him—or worse—in an unguarded moment. The choice is coming—love him or save him—but Allison might not live to make it. One way or another, the curse will have its due.

Review: This is not what I excepted when reading a book about succubuses. I loved the contrast that showed between the two girls. It gave these "fantasy characters" a type of everyday reality to them. At some points in the story I felt Allison was a little to angsty for my liking but I loved the twists the author threw in. I would probably give this book a 3 out of 5 and I hope the main problem in the book gets resolved in the future.

~Wendy Higgins, the author of the New York Times bestselling Sweet Evil series, reimagines the Brothers Grimm fairy tale “The Singing Bone” with The Great Hunt, a dramatic, romance-filled fantasy in which hunters compete to kill a great beast and win the hand of the princess.

Kill the beast. Win the girl. New York Times bestselling author Wendy Higgins delivers a dark fantasy filled with rugged hunters, romantic tension, and a princess willing to risk all to save her kingdom.

When a monstrous beast attacks in Eurona, desperate measures must be taken. The king sends a proclamation to the best and bravest hunters: whoever kills the creature will win the hand of his daughter Princess Aerity as a reward.

Princess Aerity recognizes her duty but cannot bear the idea of marrying a stranger—she was meant to marry for love—until a brooding local hunter, Paxton Seabolt, catches her attention. And while there’s no denying the fiery chemistry between them, Princess Aerity feels that Paxton’s mysteriousness is foreboding, maybe even dangerous.

Paxton is not the marrying type. Nor does he care much for spoiled royals and their arcane laws. He is determined to keep his focus on the task at hand—ridding the kingdom of the beast—but the princess continues to surprise him, and the secrets he’s buried begin to surface against his wishes.

Review: Can I just take a minute and say AHHHHHHHH! We get so many points of view in this book and here's the magical thing, they are all cohesive. Thank goodness for that awesomeness.  The book is kind of typical fairy tailesct in that there is a princess and a monster. However, toss in a little underlining political agenda and you have a book that combines brave with beauty and the beast. There is so much going on in this book and to be honest you have a monster but no clear bad guy and I find that adds to the intrigue of this book.  I would give this a 4 out of 5.

*spoiler*
The end kills me though, I just wanted to throw my book and go what the heck just happened. Someone needs to V8 Paxton, is all I'm saying.

Chained melodies book blitz

ChainedMelodies (2)
Welcome to the Book Blitz for Chained Melodies by Debrah Martin!

Chained Melodies: a startling transgender story to rival The Danish Girl:
Chained Melodies is the story of two men, three people and the meaning of love.

ChainedMelodiesEngland in the 1960s: Will Robinson and Tom Wilson are just two ordinary boys – best friends, But Will and Tom will grow up to be very different people to the schoolboys who scrumped apples and scraped knees together. By the time they’re in their twenties, Tom has experienced death and disillusionment whilst serving in Northern Ireland and is questioning everything he ever believed in. Will has discovered he’s living in the wrong body. It takes courage to face the truth, but it takes a different kind of courage to live with it. Tom and Will find that courage through each other – and an unexpected kind of love. Chained Melodies tells Will, Tom and Billie’s stories – an echo of Lili Elbe’s, and a foreshadowing of Caitlyn Jenner’s.

Chained Melodies was first released in early 2013 to critical acclaim as Chained Melody, but has been out of print for the last year. Reviewers commented on the first release:

“…a beautiful book about love, acceptance and self-discovery …”
“…truly a must read …”
“…it's not a transsexual love story, it's a love story that happens to feature transsexuals. The author did an amazing job making the characters three-dimensional and their self-discovery journey is transforming not just for them, but the reader too.”

It has now been updated and revised and is on release from 5th October 2015 under its new title, coincidentally close to the forthcoming limited release of The Danish Girl starring Eddie Redmayne – the story of Lili Elbe, the first male to female SRS, and also mentioned in Chained Melodies. The author worked with members of the transgender community to write the book, and was interviewed on radio with one of them following the original release, which was also linked to the nationally touring portrait exhibition of transgender people titled Living My Life, compiled by Sheffield NHS trust.
